How I can help

Bereavement counselling in Pontefract

In the words of someone grieving

It comes in waves. I can be fine, getting on with the day, and then something small, a song, a smell, an empty chair, knocks the breath out of me. Other times I feel nothing at all, just numb, and that frightens me too.

People expected me to be better by now. But there is no timetable for this, and grief does not move in a tidy line. Some days I am angry, some days unbearably sad, and some days I feel a guilty kind of relief I cannot say out loud.

I have lost someone, and a part of myself seems to have gone with them. I am not sure who I am in a world that no longer has them in it.

If this feels like you

Grief is the price of love, and it can take many shapes: shock, anger, numbness, guilt, exhaustion, all of it normal. And grief is not only for a death. The end of a relationship, or of a future you had counted on, can bring it too. If any of this is familiar, it may help to know what counselling can offer.

How counselling can help

Counselling offers a place where your grief is allowed to be exactly what it is, without anyone tidying it up or telling you to move on.

Together we can make room for the waves, the anger and the guilt, and for the love that sits underneath them all. There is no fixing this, and I would never pretend otherwise. But you do not have to carry it alone, or keep performing being alright when you are not.

In time, and at your own pace, many people find a way to hold their loss alongside a life that can still hold meaning. We can take the first steps of that together.

I'm Alison, a BACP registered counsellor. I offer counselling in person in Pontefract and Wakefield, and online across the UK. We can start with a free, no pressure 20 minute call so you can decide if I'm the right counsellor for you. Sessions are 50 minutes, at a pace that suits you.

If this feels familiar and you'd like support, please get in touch. A short, no pressure call or a simple message is enough to start.
